Once every two years, the community of Chinese Vietnamese people in Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province, jubilantly hold the Nghinh Ong Festival. It is the most distinctive procession of Quan Thanh De Quan (Quan Kong) – the symbol of strength-braveness-goodness-faith - who incarnated as a saint in Chinese history.

The three-day festival consists of many rites, praying for clement weather, bumper crops and a peaceful nation, particularly the “Nghinh Ong’s travel” which attracted the participation of thousands of local people. According to the local customs, the procession of Quan Kong palanquin takes place from the Quan Thanh De Temple, which was built in 1778, along the Ca Ty River and around the City, en0gulfed in exciting music and colourful lanterns and flags.

Participating in the festival are many artistic troupes from the Chinese provinces of Fu Jian, Chao Zhou, Guang Dong and Hai Nan plus disciples from martial arts schools and lion, unicorn and dragon dance teams with interesting repertoires from around the nation.

One of the interesting events at the festival is the competition among lion, unicorn and dragon dance teams. This year’s festival saw the impressive Thanh Long dragon dance show in Phan Thiet City which was performed rhythmically by 150 people - a record in Southeast Asia.

Coming to the festival, visitors will have a chance to see many other cultural activities, such as Tuong (classical drama) performance, a program of traditional fashion, games, cooking competitions and enjoy delicious Vietnamese and Chinese food.

Nghinh Ong Festival not only preserves intact its rites but also expands its festive activities. It is one of the five most typical festivals of people in Binh Thuan Province, attracting many visitors from home and abroad.
